My name is Maya Wheeler, and I’m running for Aurora City Council At-Large.

I grew up in Boulder, where my mother worked hard to raise my brother and myself. After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder, I moved to Aurora where I began working in Corporate America; which was over 18 years ago when I fell in love with the city and felt that it would be a great place to raise a family.

Working for IBM, I had a great career with a decent salary and benefits, which helped me provide a high quality of life for my three children. However, all of this changed when I was laid off at the height of the recession like so many other Americans.

I decided to go to work in health care where I provided community outreach and built community coalitions for a nursing facility in Park Hill. Later, I went to work for American Humane Association where I began advocating for Colorado children.

It was while working to provide opportunities for vulnerable residents in Colorado. I saw a great need for strong leadership in Aurora. I saw a need for someone who would stand up to the status quo and represent the needs of ALL Aurora residents. I saw a need for community-focused leadership that would lead Aurora to a brighter future.

This is why I’m running for Aurora City Council At-Large. I’m running because I understand the need to create real economic opportunities. I’m running to protect Aurora’s current assets and attract new industries that promote job growth. I’m running because I want to build a city that works for its people.

I care about building a stronger Aurora. An Aurora that helps families, protects seniors, and invests in our youth. Aurora that attracts jobs, helps small business, and advances development. Aurora that we can be proud to call home.

This is my mission but I can’t do it alone. By joining with me and supporting my campaign, together we can ensure Aurora is a better city with real opportunities for everyone.
