The Original Musical, “Together”

Bessies-Hope-073116-2Bessie’s Hope is the only organization in the country doing what they do, and they are in their 22nd year o sf serving metro Denver and surrounding areas. Their work enhances the lives of nursing home and assisted living elders through their volunteer programs that engage youth groups, families, individuals, corporations and civic organizations. All volunteers receive education and training in order to have meaningful interaction with elders of all levels of cognitive functioning, including advanced Alzheimer’s Disease.

Nationally, sixty percent of nursing home elders receive NO personal visitors, and they have so much to offer all younger generations – wisdom and wonderful stories from a different world. At the other end of the age spectrum, the at-risk youth who participate with Bessie’s Hope from residential treatment centers for troubled teens and other programs benefit as much as the elders. They often are transformed right before your eyes, as respect and compassion are awakened in their hearts. Both age groups feel valued and needed by the other, and the ripple effect throughout the communities is infinite.

From an 18-yr old male volunteer, “I grew up in violence. I thought that was the answer to everything. Bessie’s Hope helped me find a new me inside.” A 96 yearr-old woman said, “Bringing the young and old together like this is not just a pleasure; it’s a necessity.”

Bessies-Hope-073116The original musical, TOGETHER, written by the Bessie’s Hope co-founders, beautifully depicts the “real-life” work of the organization. With 26 cast members and 17 songs, this enchanting, heartwarming musical is about a group of kids who become friends with a group of nursing home elders. A statement reflecting social justice and our society’s need for intergenerational relationships is intertwined in the laughter, entertainment, and inspiration that you will experience by attending one of the 8 performances. Two professional ASL interpreters, Leah Aragon and Maya Luckner, have volunteered to sign the entire musical – dialogue and songs – for Opening Night and for Closing Matinee! How wonderful!!! This IS a MUST-SEE musical that will live in your hearts forever.
