Sunrise T’ai-Chi and Walks in the Park
~ Public encouraged to Come out and play this summer ~
What: “Sunrise T’ai Chi in the Park” kicks off in June and continues through September. Free and open to all, the public will have an opportunity to experience for themselves the ancient mind body exercise of t’ai-chi. Program includes demonstrations and follow along activities to celebrate the health benefits of this timeless meditation in motion.
Why: Despite considerable epidemiological evidence of the health benefits of physical activity, most people still do not get enough physical activity (Healthy People 2020). Physical inactivity leads to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis, dramatically increases the risk of falls in older adults and is a factor in many other chronic diseases and conditions. The problems created by a lack of physical activity are only going to get worse.
- Only 51% of Coloradans get the recommended level of physical activity per week.
- In Denver, 17 % get no leisure time physical activity at all.
- One in three older adults experience a fall each year.
- Falls cause significant injury, loss of independence and deaths among older adults.
T’ai-chi has shown a wide range of health benefits, including increased strength and functional mobility, flexibility, psychological well-being, sleep enhancement and increased aerobic functioning. Exploratory studies are underway on the effects of t’ai-chi on immune function, bone loss, arthritis and immune disorders.
Where: The class will meet at the Rose Garden on the west side of the Museum of Nature and Science.
When: On Thursday mornings from 7- 8am, June, July, and August
