St. Andrew United Methodist Church Hosts Safety Event for Senior Drivers

Highlands Ranch – DRIVE ON! safely, confidently, responsibly and longer! It’s great to be retired from working, but few people want to retire from driving. Because St. Andrew United Methodist Church wants to help seniors stay behind the wheel as long as possible, it is teaming up with AAA Colorado and ROAD (Reaching Older Adult Drivers) to host DRIVE ON!,a FREE event Saturday, June 10 – 8:00am-12:30 pm at 9203 S. University Blvd, Highlands Ranch.

Rev. Jolain Graf says, “We’re excited to offer this free event to the Highlands Ranch community and beyond. Everyone is welcome! Come and join us for a morning of fun and learning.”

Seniors and their families will be able to talk to auto industry professionals about innovative technology and helpful accessories that are featured in new “senior friendly” vehicles that will be on display. In addition, the event features four 45-minute presentations that will each run twice throughout the morning. They include the topics: 1) new road signs, lanes and laws; 2) adaptive equipment for safe driving; 3) car maintenance update, and 4) senior friendly new and used cars.

During the event, seniors can determine how well their personal vehicle fits them by going through a CarFit checkup. It is a process where specially trained technicians complete a 12-point checklist and then suggest adjustments or adaptations that can enhance the driver’s comfort and vehicle control. This 20-minute process also provides information on community resources that can improve driver safety and/or increase their mobility within the community. (Reservations for the CarFit program are preferred – call 303-991-5740)

If attendees would rather bike, Bike Mania is an added attraction that will encourages visitors tozero in one that suits their needs, body, and style, while they enjoy riding it. Participants will be able to give the new e-Bike a test drive or maybe the adult tricycle or step-through variety. BikeSource will bring those that are designed for comfort and fun.

During the DRIVE ON! event, seniors may also register for AARP’s Smart Driver Course on Saturday, June 17 at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, Highlands Ranch, 9 am-1pm. Seniors may be eligible to receive auto insurance premium discounts after attending the course for drivers 50+.
