Sensory Outings Center – Denver Area’s Alzheimer’s Wellness Program
Sensory Outings Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization offering a unique environment dedicated to the needs and abilities of people with Alzheimer’s with emphasis on dignity and independence. Our mission is to provide these special people with a life enrichment facility that promotes self-worth and independence. We believe people with Alzheimer’s need a place to visit that allows them to participate in activities that they remember and enjoy. Sensory Outings Center is for residents with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia that live at-home with their spouses or family member or at assisted living facilities.
Harvard Gulch Recreation Center, in Denver, CO, currently hosts our pilot program every Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am and 12:15 pm sessions. Our program sessions include Montessori-inspired activities designed to enhance self-care and sensory-motor skills:
- Workbench and Tools
- Women’s Boutique
- Men’s Shop
- Kitchen Activities
- Art & Crafts, and
- Gardening & Outdoors.
Our Women’s Boutique and Men’s Shop has clothes donated by the Junior League of Denver. The women and men may take two to three items home free of charge. Our workbench includes hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and sandpaper just to name a few. Each week, we bring out a couple of new activities to mix in with the standard activities. We are excited to report that our program has been a huge success and is continuing to provide a positive experience for our participants.
