Safe & Healthy in the summer sun!
By Nutrition Services staff, Volunteers of America ~
After being stuck indoors enduring frigid winter weather, it’s summer! Time to get outdoors and enjoy the activities you love. But just like anything, we can get too much of a good thing, like too much sun. As we get older our skin becomes more delicate and susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays and can lead health problems. Always put safety first to have an enjoyable and safe summer.
Apply Sun Screen Often
Apply broad spectrum sunblock SPF 30 or higher 15 minutes before going outside and again every 2 hours. If you don’t have much hair don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the top of your head!
Stay Hydrated!
As you age your sense of thirst lessens and dehydration can come on quickly! Drink plenty of water and snack on water rich foods like fruits and vegetables. Drink more fluids if you’re doing any physical activity or the weather is hot.
Dress Appropriately
Cover up as much as you can while still feeling cool and comfortable! Try wearing loose, light-colored clothes, a wide brimmed hat, long sleeves or pants. An umbrella is great for shade and sunglasses are great to preserve your vision.
What about the “Sunshine Vitamin”?
Sun causes our body to produce vitamin D which is essential for strong bones, fall prevention and a healthy immune system. Despite the importance, it is best to limit sun exposure since the health risks are significant. You can obtain Vitamin D through your diet instead!
Good Sources of Vitamin D: Salmon, tuna, eggs & vitamin D fortified products like low fat milk and soymilk. What about Vitamin D supplements? Talk to a healthcare professional to determine if you need to take a vitamin supplement.
