Retirees Can Still Make a Difference – Jan. 2015
Senior Tax Volunteers: Adams County will again operate the Senior Tax Assistance Program to help seniors prepare their tax forms. Many volunteers are needed to help and training will be done just before tax season. Call now to receive information. Call Tom at 303-426-4408 or email@example.com.
Senior Hub Meals on Wheels (MOW) is critically short on drivers meaning some folks may not get to benefit from this important meal delivery program. Can you help us? Please call Tom at RSVP today!
SWAT (Schools Where All Thrive Tutor/Mentor Program): Only 2 hours per week are required, but you will make a huge difference in the success or failure of young students. Teams of volunteers work with 2nd or 3rd grade students behind in reading in school districts Adams 1, 12, 50 and Brighton 27J. Our next training will take place in January, so contact Ron Ausmus now to get more details, and to let him know of your interest. You can reach him at 303-426-4408 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Military Veterans Health and Help Squads: A program for (55 or older) military veterans and/or their spouses. Squads of vets/vet spouses share short weekly phone visits with members of their squad to let them know someone cares and is thinking about them. They can also meet together to help with activities, share a meal or attend an event. Tell your vet friends so they can join a squad with you. Mention this to veterans groups you belong to. It’s fun. Come join us! Call Tom at RSVP today.
Adams 12 Totes of Hope Program: This program helps alleviate child hunger by providing nutritional support over weekends and during school holidays to homeless children or those from low-income families with food insecurity. They get a 9-10 lb. backpack with fruit, vegetables, entrees and healthy snacks donated by Food Bank of the Rockies. Volunteers meet twice a month on Wednesday mornings between 9:30 – 11:30 a.m. to pack the backpacks. Location: Adams 12 Education Support Center at 1500 E. 128th Ave. in Thornton. For information call Tom Rapp at 303-426-4408 or email@example.com.
Disaster Preparedness Team: We’re looking for locations to present this vital information. Team members alert the public and especially senior citizens on how to be prepared in advance for natural or other disasters. We can also use more team members to do these presentations. Call RSVP for details.
Home care: Senior Hub’s Home Care department volunteers provide grocery shopping, run errands, do light housekeeping, offer business help or simply friendly visits and telephone reassurance to those who are homebound. Call RSVP for information.
Other needs: Volunteers to help in schools besides the SWAT Program mentioned above; Aurora MOW and Brighton MOW drivers are needed. Senior Hub Adult Day service in Northglenn needs helpers at mealtimes and to help with activities during the day. Additional needs: Recycling event helpers; helping at food banks; serving congregate meals; serving in hospitals or senior centers; serving on boards and committees. Yarn Needed: Donate 4-ply, non-wool yarn for our volunteers who make lap robes for nursing homes. Call RSVP for information about all above opportunities and others not listed here.
