Retirees Can Still Make a Difference – June 2014
Military Veterans Health and Help Squads: A new program for senior military veterans and/or spouses. Squads of 5-6 vets/vet spouses make short weekly phone calls to the other members of their squad to let them know someone cares and is thinking about them. They might also meet to help with activities, share a meal or attend an event together. To be placed on a squad, you just complete an RSVP enrollment form to help us assign you and tally your monthly hours as a squad member. We’ll have Health and Help Squads in: Aurora; Brighton; Commerce City; Federal Heights-Westminster-Southwest Adams; Northglenn – Thornton; Eastern Plains (Watkins, Bennett, Strasburg, Byers and Deer Trail). We ask for an Òenlistment periodÓ of 3-6 months so squad members will have time to build friendships. We’ll provide conversation tips. Tell your vet friends so they can join a squad with you. And pass this to veterans groups you know. While helping others you’ll be helped yourself. To join a Health and Help Squad near you call (303)955-6609. If we’re out, please leave a number and a time we can reach you.
Disaster Preparedness Team: Team members inform the public and especially senior citizens how to be prepared for and deal with natural or other disasters. We need several more helpers. Call RSVP for info.

Other volunteer needs: Community garden helpers, transportation services for homebound/elderly; in-home/respite care; helping at food banks; serving congregate meals; serving in hospitals; helping in senior centers; serving on boards and agency committees. Call us to discuss these and other current volunteer opportunities.
