Ramblings of a Rambler – July 2014
Finally, Summer Time in Colorado! I hope everyone is enjoying our wonderful weather. It took me a few years to get accustomed to the rhythm of summer in Colorado. Get out in the morning if you want to go for a walk or a hike. The afternoons have the potential of rain anytime, anywhere. . .
My eldest son invited me on a Father’s Day hike at the Rocky Mountain National Park. We tried to get to Chasm Lake which lies behind Longs Peak but ran into a snow field about a half mile from the lake. The crossing was about a hundred yards wide on a very steep slope. I took a few steps into the snow and decided I’d kill myself if I went any further. Two years ago we went on our Fathers Day hike and I fell and severely broke my wrist. You haven’t lived until you suffer a major injury and have to hike two hours back to your car. I learned a lot about myself and about my son that day. He took good care of me. We both remained calm and worked our way back. We met numerous people along the way that offered help in anyway they could. I couldn’t thank them enough. The following day I had surgery to mend my boo boo. I now have a spiffy plate and 13 screws in my wrist. . .
We drove to the Estes Emergency room. I remember sitting in the examination room and seeing all sorts of air cast lining the room. I recall thinking these guys see a lot of broken bones. Everyone from the nurse at the check in to the Doc that operated were fantastic. I consider myself very fortunate to have landed there. My wrist is perfect now. It took a good year before most of the nerves came back to life but I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job putting me back together. . .
Happy 4th of July!!!
Have a wonderful time celebrating our nations 238th birthday. A few years ago we had the opportunity to spend the 4th on the River Charles in Boston. Our youngest son was attending school at the time. If you ever have the opportunity to make the trip go. It’s an amazing all day event. I’d love to go back someday. . .
