Online Beyond Vision Peer Support Groups
In these times, it is of great importance that we connect with each other and inform one another about services, activities and community needs. The Beyond Vision Program at the Center for People with Disabilities (CPWD) is a program that assists people in our community with visual impairment or blindness to achieve and maintain independence. We have made great efforts to continue Beyond Vision services while keeping with safe distance guidelines.
All Beyond Vision services have gone online, including peer support groups, independent living skills training, education, and assistive technology training. We are meeting our identified community where they are, with a variety of online options, and we know that there are still many individuals with visual impairment who may need our services but may not be aware of them.
As part of the aging population and the disability community, our seniors with visual impairment are significantly more vulnerable than the mainstream population. In addition to health risks, they also have a higher rate of isolation and/or mental and emotional health challenges.
To address community needs and reduce vulnerability related risks, we have increased our volume of services, adding peer support groups that are open to the public, and workshops designed to assist individuals in their homes during COVID-19. In addition, CPWD’s Independent Living Advisors (ILAs) offer daily online peer support groups that discuss independent living strategies and resources, and cover a variety of discovery topics such as chair yoga and exploring national parks. We also offer a monthly, online, Spanish-speaking peer support group facilitated by a Beyond Vision and ILA staff member.
Please join us for Weekly Virtual Peer Support Groups:
