Free Community Health Classes Offered in January

COAW, the Consortium for Older Adult Wellness, is offering free community health classes that begin in January. Register at the contacts listed. COAW is a nonprofit organization that provides health and wellness leader trainings, community health classes and falls prevention screenings throughout Colorado to assist individuals and communities in achieving better health. Denver—Chronic Pain Self-Management (6-week program)—Thursdays, Jan. 11-Feb. 22 from 1-3:30 p.m. at Seniors Resource Center, 3227 Chase St., Denver, CO 80212. The class is free to people age 60 and older. This program helps people deal with the challenges of living with chronic pain. Classes are highly participative, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their health and maintain active and fulfilling lives. Evergreen—National Diabetes Prevention Program (1-year program)—Tuesdays, Jan. 23-Dec. 18. The free program meets for 16 weekly sessions followed by six monthly sessions from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Centura Health Golden Neighborhood Health Center, 750 Warner Drive, Golden, CO 80401. If you have pre-diabetes or other risk factors for type 2 diabetes, it’s time to take charge of your health. The National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), utilizes lifestyle change intervention to reduce your risk of type 2 diabetes. This free program is designed for people living with diabetes and their caregivers and teaches making healthy choices and self-management skills. It is highly participatory, where mutual support and success build the participants’ confidence in their ability to manage their diabetes and maintain an active fulfilling life.
