Denver Housing Authority’s Healthy Food for Denver Kids Receives Award

Denver Housing Authority (DHA) was presented with the award of excellence for the Healthy Food for Denver Kids program. The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) unveiled the honor at its Washington, D.C. conference which recognizes outstanding innovation and achievement in housing and community development programs throughout the country.

“This is a proud moment for DHA and the thriving communities we are working in,” Joaquin Cintrón Vega, Chief Executive Officer said. “This honor showcases the innovative ways our team empowers neighborhoods. Together, we are making a difference!”

The NAHRO Award of Excellence presented to DHA was in the category of resident and client services food distribution and nutrition education for youth and families. Award winners are chosen from Award of Merit entries by NAHRO regional juries and sent on to the national competition for final judging.

DHA, in partnership with its non-profit Youth Employment Academy (YEA,) addresses food insecurity in Denver through education, food distribution and youth leadership in horticulture. YEA provides healthy cooking and nutrition classes for families, along with distributing healthy snacks to youth and creating an “Edible Artscape’s” project in one of DHA’s public housing neighborhoods. By strengthening families’ capacity to identify, eat, and cook healthy meals with fresh ingredients and making decisions about their diets/eating habits at a young age, the program aids in promoting a healthy lifestyle for low-income youth and their families. Through this program, families now have an expanded knowledge base of nutrition and healthy cooking, access to healthy food, and an exposure to urban farming. This is a long-term, sustainable solution that changes eating habits and increases understanding of the food system.
