Colorado Lung Health Connection

For well over a century Colorado has been a world-renowned center for the care and treatment of lung disease. Both the University of Colorado division of Pulmonary Science and National Jewish Health maintain outstanding programs for all disciplines of respiratory diagnosis and treatment.
Thomas L. Petty, MD, was a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver and at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He was also Professor of Medicine Emeritus at National Jewish Health in Denver. Dr. Petty, an international authority on respiratory disease, had published over 800 articles in medical journals. He was the author or editor of 45 books or editions.
Dr. Petty’s first consideration was always been the individual patient’s physical and emotional welfare and he devoted many years championing collaborative care as a partnership between patient and physician.
In the spring of 2004, inspired by the impetus of the first United States Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (USCOPD) Coalition that was held in Arlington VA November 2003, Dr. Petty brought together a committee consisting of patients and professionals from the University of Colorado, National Jewish Health, the American Lung Association of Colorado, other healthcare institutions and medical equipment providers. The committee soon became the Colorado COPD Connection and over the past eleven years has organized, and implemented a grassroots educational day featuring well-known speakers in the fields of pulmonology, long-term oxygen therapy and equipment, and other topics of interest to the Lung Health Community. In 2006 members of the Colorado COPD Connection and the Colorado Department of Public Health established the first State COPD Coalition. The Colorado COPD State Plan and Surveillance Report has served as a prototype for many of the other State COPD Coalitions.
The annual Conference was officially designated the “Thomas L. Petty, MD Moving Mountains Lung Health Conference” in 2009 and in early 2012 the Colorado COPD Connection planning committee decided to change their name to the Colorado Lung Health Connection (CLHC) in order to be more inclusive of all lung diseases.
Membership in the CLHC Planning Committee is open to patients, caregivers, professionals and provider or anyone with an interest in Lung Health Issues. Meetings are held monthly on the third Tuesday at 1PM at the American Lung Association of Colorado at 5600 Greenwood Plaza Blvd., Englewood Colorado. For information contact John Striet RRT 303-867-0267.
