Close the Gap in Senior Care collaborates with Lowe’s Livable Home to provide grab bars to seniors in need
The collaboration will expand the nonprofit’s current initiative to prevent falls, which are the number one cause of fatal injury to seniors ~
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – June 10, 2022 – Close the Gap in Senior Care, the nonprofit arm of Caring Senior Service, announced today it is collaborating with Lowe’s Livable Home, a one-stop destination started by Lowe’s Home Improvement stores to offer aging-in-place and life-change solutions, to distribute and install grab bars as part of the Grab the Bars initiative.
Jeff Salter, president of Close the Gap in Senior Care and founder and CEO of Caring Senior Service, said the collaboration will allow the nonprofit to expand its Grab the Bars initiative to help more seniors and people with disabilities install much-needed grab bars in their homes to help prevent falls. Falls are the number one cause of fatal injury in older Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We are excited that Lowe’s Livable Home saw the value in our lifesaving mission and are pleased that we will be able to help more seniors install grab bars in their homes,” Salter said. “So many of our nominees are on a fixed income and cannot afford to purchase and install this simple solution, leaving them vulnerable to falls.”
Lowe’s Companies, Inc. announced the creation of the Lowe’s Livable Home program in November as part of its commitment to becoming the leading retail destination for aging-in-place and life-changing solutions. Lowe’s Livable Home offers a one-stop destination for universal design options that include access to expert advice, services and affordable products.
Lowe’s entered a unique training and content collaboration with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to serving people 50 years and older and their families, as a part of the program.
According to AARP’s Home and Community Preferences Survey, 77% of adults over 50 want to remain in their homes for the long term, and eight in 10 adults want to stay where they live but lack the expertise to adapt their home to meet their needs.
The collaboration between the two organizations allows Caring Senior Service’s community partners to identify and nominate seniors with low or fixed incomes to receive a complete installation of two grab bars in their bathroom. Qualified candidate names will be sent to the local Lowe’s Livable Home affiliate to schedule the installation.
“Caring Senior Service believes that seniors are happier and healthier when they can age in place,” Salter said. “We initially created the Close the Gap in Senior Care as a movement to raise awareness of overlooked and underserved aspects of senior care, such as the need to adapt housing for long-term living. We are proud that this initiative has grown into an established nonprofit and that we are able to work with Lowe’s to give back to our seniors across the country.”
Grab the Bars is the first initiative of Caring Senior Service’s brand new Close the Gap in Senior Care nonprofit foundation.
