Denver, Colo. — The Byers-Evans House Gallery announced today that A Handful of Dust, images by noted photographer and documentary filmmaker Allen Birnbach, will debut with a free reception from 5 to 9 p.m. during the First Friday Art Walk in the Golden Triangle Museum District on June 6. The show will be on view through August 30, 2014. Admission to the opening reception is free.

Families have ranched and stewarded their lands for generations. In an era of income inequality, climate change, and gas and oil exploration, Birnbach documents these families’ battles against cultural, economic and environmental challenges that threaten to destroy their way of life.

“Once considered a fixture of the American West, ranching may not make it to the next generation,” photographer Allen Birnbach said. “There are potentially insurmountable inheritance tax burdens for land rich but cash poor families, cities seeking additional water rights for their growing populations, competition with recreational and energy related activities on leased government land, and the impact of climate change. By documenting ranchers through still and motion pictures, I hope to bring a voice to the challenges of families who want to see their way of life survive.”

Photographer Allen Birnbach, born in 1949, was raised and educated in New York. After studying at Queens College, he took a year off and discovered photography. While on a cross country trip with a stop in Telluride, Allen decided to move to the mountain town to photograph its evolution from mining town to ski area. The purity of the environment and the sincerity of the people gave him the long-range vision he was looking for in both his professional and his personal life. The camera has led him to his life’s work.

Birnbach’s photography has received recognition in The New York Art Director’s Club One Show, The ARC Annual Report Competitions, Print Magazine, International Color Awards, Communication Arts Magazine, Photo Design Magazine, Photomethods, The Black and White Spider Awards, and Photo District News.
