Dr. Scott Storrie will review how improving daily diet, lifestyle choices, movement, and hormones can have a profound impact on the body’s inflammatory and regenerative response. Participants will also learn how certain types of movement and exercise can help restore and maintain the integrity of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and help generate new tissue. Each year more than 65 million Americans report suffering from back pain and it is the second most common reason people visit their physicians. More than 80% of adults experience back pain at some point during their lives. This class will review the basics of back pain and treatment options from a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon. Learn the different types of back pain and causes, conservative treatment options and the latest in surgical techniques including minimally invasive procedures. Come prepared to ask questions and get answers for relief from back pain.

Learn to use essential oils for body care and home use. Presenter: Brigitte Mars is an author, herbalist and nutritional consultant of Natural Health with almost fifty years’ experience. She teaches herbal Medicine at Naropa University, and The School of Health Mastery in Iceland, as well as numerous other locations throughout the country. She blogs for the Huffington Post and Care2, and is a professional member of the American Herbalist Guild.

Facebook provides an excellent way to stay connected online with family and friends. This beginner’s overview class will explain how the social media platform works, the commonly used terms and the steps for setting up a personal account. This presentation also gives the users the basic skills to post, make and accept friend requests, comment on posts, and manage privacy settings. Housing Options for Older Adults

Representatives from Boulder County Housing Authority, Boulder Housing Partners and other housing specialists will educate participants on housing options for older adults living in Boulder County now or in the future. Topics will include affordable housing, the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8), and the uses of Medicaid and long-term care. The discussion will also include options for aging in community and the continuum of care from independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing facilities. Handouts will be provided.

Progression and Prevention of Frailty with Aging

With the growing number of adults over the age of 65, it is helpful to have a greater understanding and awareness of the functional limitations associated with aging. This class will explore preventative practices in exercise and nutrition which aim to slow declines in muscle and bone health which can contribute to frailty. Instructor: Kaitlin Freeberg, B.A. Exercise and Sport Science. She currently works as a graduate research assistant in the Integrative Physiology of Aging Laboratory at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The Internet offers so many opportunities to create, explore, collaborate and shop online. This class will show participants how to manage online experiences in a safe and secure way, whether surfing, shopping or social networking. Participants will review how to browse safely, shop smart, recognize and avoid web and email scams, practice password safety and use precautions with public WiFi. Exercise and Osteoporosis

Various forms of exercise have been shown to improve bone density, balance, posture, strength, flexibility and coordination, with an overall goal to prevent falls. Join physical therapist and yoga teacher, Jeanette Burney, to discuss osteoporosis, its prevalence, preventative measures and exercise options including yoga, resistance exercise and stretching. Presenter: Jeanette Burney is a physical therapist and yoga teacher with certifications in manual physical therapy, yoga for osteoporosis, functional dry needling, and prenatal/postpartum exercise.

CarFit offers drivers a free opportunity to check how their cars “fit” them. Developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), CarFit’s trained professionals take older drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle and recommend minor adjustments that help make their cars “fit” better for comfort and safety. An occupational therapist is also on hand to explain how to maintain and strengthen driving health. Limited appointments available: call 303-441-4150 for an appointment.
