Birthday Celebration for 101 Year Old and Baby Sister (age 93)
On Wednesday, March 27, 2019, about 15 special friends and family gathered at the Golden Corral Restaurant in Aurora to celebrate a birthday celebration for big sister, Roberta Thomas (for her 101st birthday – DOB: 3/17/18) and younger sister, Bessie Jones (for her 93rd birthday – DOB: 3/8/26). Born in Cancienne, Louisiana, Ms. Roberta is the eldest child of 3 brothers (now deceased) and one sister, Bessie Jones. After moving to Shreveport, Ms. Roberta later relocated to Colorado in 1995 to be closer to her baby sister, Bessie. Her work history includes working at the Del Mar Senior Center, Aurora, Colorado for 17 long years as a loyal worker in the dining room. Earlier this month, Aurora Police Officer James Seneca surprised Ms. Roberta with a birthday cake for her 101st birthday as a special treat to his centenarian friend. In June 2018, Big Sister Roberta was saluted with the Sisters Enterprise “Centenarian of the Year Award.” She was also featured as one of the honorable centenarians in the Sisters Enterprise recently published THESE ARE THEir Random Acts of Kindness book [Positively Powered Publications, 2018].
Baby Sister Bessie Jones is retired and is the mother of nine children, 19 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren. As a native of Louisiana, Ms. Bessie and her late husband, Leon Jones, Sr. were married for 72 years; they moved to Colorado in 1987. Ms. Carol Galloway and Linda Donna serenaded the birthday girls with special birthday songs and spirited a cappella music. The sisters received flowers, gifts from the heart, hugs and heartfelt prayers. Special guests included Deacon William Golson, Louis & Carol Ware, Emma Chambers, Lenora Hull, Carol J. Galloway, Linda Donna, Mattie Guffie, Betty Funderburke and Elinora Reynolds.
Birthday guests enjoyed a scrumptious luncheon meal, drinks and dessert compliments of Aurora’s Golden Corral Restaurant. As proud members of True Light Baptist Church, both Bessie and Roberta enjoy their fellowship at their home church with friends and parishioners under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Shannon J. Warner.
