Benefits in Action: Available Insurance Options

By Eric Gonzalez ~

Are you searching for a viable health insurance option? If so, you are not alone. Many individuals are currently out of work and have lost their employer health insurance or are otherwise currently without health insurance. You may be thinking, I can’t enroll in health insurance now as it has been too long since I last had coverage. However, this may not mean that health insurance is out of reach. There are currently several ways to get health insurance. Three of those ways are through Medicare, Connect 4 Health, and Medicaid. This article discusses each of these methods for obtaining health insurance.

The first way you might be able to obtain health insurance is through Medicare’s General Enrollment Period. If you are over 65 or have been on Social Security Disability for more than two years, this may be an option for you. If you haven’t already enrolled in Medicare and are eligible, this General Enrollment Period allows you to sign up for Original Medicare parts A and B. Coverage won’t begin until July 1st and you will have to pay the appropriate premiums. The Medicare General Enrollment Period lasts until March 31, 2021. Also, during this period if you are already on a Medicare Advantage Plan but want to switch to another advantage plan you may be able to do that through March 31st).

Another option might be to obtain health insurance through the Colorado Health Exchange, better known as Connect 4 Health Colorado (C4H). Connect 4 Health Colorado currently has a special enrollment period for anyone who does not have health insurance. This is called an Uninsured Enrollment Period. This open enrollment period will last until May 15, 2021. If you sign up for a health insurance plan using C4H, your plan will take effect the first day of the month after you applied. So, if you haven’t had health insurance for a while, this might be a good option for you. You may qualify for premium assistance or tax credits depending upon your income.

Connect 4 Health Colorado might also be a good alternative for finding health insurance if your life circumstances have recently changed due to a qualifying Life Change Event. These can include, you moved to an area where your health insurance no longer provides coverage, you had a baby or got married. These are some of the events that might make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period with C4H.

Another possible way to obtain health insurance is through Health First Colorado, Colorado’s Medicaid program. Medicaid is for low-income individuals who fall below certain income thresholds. For example, if you are a single individual with no dependents, you can apply for Medicaid and if you earn less than $1,415 a month you are likely eligible. However, these income requirements can vary based on your household size and individual circumstances, so it is important to speak to someone who can help you navigate these requirements. You can apply for Medicaid at any time, there is no requirement to apply within a window of losing other health insurance coverage.
