LITTLETON, CO—On Sat., Feb. 4, 2017, local artist Phyllis Vandehaar will lead a one-day workshop, “Be Playful with Watercolor and Ink,” for the Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County.

Participants will draw with a device called the Speedball® Elegant Writer® calligraphy marker, a high-quality pen containing ink that flows into a lovely array of fluid values when water or watercolor paints are applied. Vandehaar will demonstrate and show examples. Participants will start out with a small piece of paper to experience what the Elegant Writer® will do. Afterward, the class will use a larger format for more elaborate work.

A working artist in watercolor, mixed media, pastels, charcoal, and collage, Vandehaar earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine art from the University of Colorado. For many years, she served as a high school art teacher, primarily at Arapahoe High School in Littleton. Her mantra was always, “If art isn’t challenging, enlightening, enjoyable and requiring the thinking process, there is something wrong!” She prefers to abstract her subject matter using loosely applied color and brush work.

Registrants are asked to bring two black Elegant Writer® pens (one broad 3.0 and one thinner 1.0, about $5 each), watercolors, watercolor paper and reference photos. Non-objective or abstract works also are acceptable. For a complete supply list see http://www.heritage-guild.com/uploads/2/3/4/6/23464008/vandenhaar-desc-material-list.pdf.

The workshop will be held February 4 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm (doors unlocked by 8:30 am) at First Presbyterian Church, 1609 W. Littleton Blvd. in Littleton, at the northwest corner of Littleton Blvd. and Windermere Street. Artists aged 18 years and older may attend; cost is $30 for Heritage Fine Arts Guild members, $50 for non-members. Membership is only $35 and sign-up forms are at http://www.heritage-guild.com/membership.html.
