Adams County Fair Seeks Royalty Contestants
The Adams County Fair is seeking applicants for the 2014 Adams County Fair Lady-in-Waiting competition, which will take place on March 8 at the Adams County Regional Park Complex at 9755 Henderson Road in Brighton, Colorado. The deadline to register is Feb. 17.
According to Fair Co-Manager Mary Willis, the Lady-in-Waiting helps represent and promote the Adams County Fair year round. “The candidate selected as the Lady-in-Waiting serves a two-year term,” said Willis. “The first year, she supports the Fair Queen, who is the primary ambassador for the Adams County Fair. Over the course of the first year, the Lady-in-Waiting gains on-the-job, hands-on experience that will serve her well as she assumes the title of Fair Queen in her second year.”
In addition to completing a contest application, contestants must attend a mandatory royalty clinic on Feb. 8. The clinic will also take place at the Adams County Regional Park Complex in Brighton. The clinic will provide guidance in hair and makeup; clothing; horsemanship; the expectations of the position; and poise and speaking tips.
Interested contestants can obtain an information packet at the Parks & Community Resources Department located at 9755 Henderson Road in Brighton. Applicants for the 2014 Lady in Waiting must be between the ages of 15-20 as of Dec. 31 of the contest year and either a legal resident of Adams County or an active member of an Adams County 4H club.
Candidates not selected as the 2014 Lady-in-Waiting are encouraged to compete in the 2015 competition, which will actually be held in September of 2014 in an effort to avoid the unpredictable weather typical of the traditional March time frame. Each Lady-in-Waiting can only hold the title once.
The Adams County Fair Royalty Program dates back to 1950 when Chloe Widen Baugh was crowned the first Queen. A special Fair Queen reunion is planned for the 2014 Adams County Fair, which marks the 110th anniversary of the event.
