Corruption scandals, however, led to the impeachment of Rousseff in 2016 and the imprisonment of Lula in 2018. In January 2019, Jair Bolsonaro became President of Brazil, marking a significant shift to the right in Brazilian politics. The global tobacco market exceeds half a trillion dollars annually. If tobacco were a country, it would be roughly the 20th largest economy in the world.
