On November 15th, 2017, the then President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe was removed from power via a military coup. Current President Emmerson Mnangagwa faces a challenging transition following a leader who was both oppressive and beloved by many. Join Active Minds as we review Zimbabwe’s history as a former British Colony, the nominally independent country of Rhodesia, and a 15 year civil war involving complicated race relations. We will also cover where the country may be heading as it seeks to find its path after nearly four decades under the dictatorial rule of Mugabe.

This past summer marked the 150 year anniversary of the “Golden Spike” that completed the construction of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Join Active Minds as we review the rich history of railroads in the United States. We will explore the role they played in building a young country as well as the industry titans that emerged to build and control them. We will bring the story all the way up to the present, discussing current freight and passenger train issues and opportunities. All aboard!

Along the way, we’ll visit some of London’s most colorful characters and notable places, including the Tower of London, where Elizabeth I was held before becoming queen. The Discovery of the South Pole
December 15th is the anniversary of the discovery of the South Pole by Roald Amundsen, “the last of the Vikings.” The race to the South Pole was one of the greatest international races prior to the race to the moon and was full of tragedy and triumph. It featured tiny, newly independent Norway against the British Empire, upon which the “sun never set.” It was David vs Goliath. Join us as we tell the gripping story of those who perished and prevailed in this epic quest.
