Devastated by hurricane Maria one year ago, Puerto Rico is still far from fully recovered. Total losses from the storm are expected to exceed $100 billion. Hundreds have died and the rebuilding of infrastructure has been much slower than many had hoped. Join Active Minds as we review the history of this important U.S. Territory, including how U.S. policies have impacted its economy and its people over the past century. We will end with a look forward as to what the future may hold for the island as it continues to rebuild.

John Williams & American Film Music
John Williams is among the most prolific and celebrated composers of our time. Join Active Minds as we explore some of his most recognized film scores, such as Jaws, Star Wars, and Schindler’s List, and other musical contributions. We will also discuss the various and changing roles music has played in American cinema, as film music has become one of the most fluid media for modern symphonic music.

In the four decades since the death of Mao Zedong, China has moved rapidly from a stagnant communist economy to a bustling market-based one, albeit under single party rule. In 2010, China became the world’s largest exporter and in 2014 it became the world’s largest economy (based on GDP).
