Afghanistan
Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. has announced its intention to withdraw combat troops from Afghanistan. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, the U.S. led a coalition invasion of Afghanistan seeking to oust the ruling Taliban and find Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden. Join Active Minds for a look at the story of Afghanistan, both before and since 9/11. We will also take a look forward at what the future holds for this war-torn country.

Cheese
The history of cheese goes back as far as 6000 BCE, long before the Ancient Egyptians and Homer. There are thousands of varieties of cheese, with local flavor differences influenced by subtle factors such as the type of grass eaten by the cows. Join Active Minds as we trace this cheesy history, including an overview of how it is made and the major categories of cheese. We’ll even cover a couple controversial topics debated by cheesophiles (yes, that’s a word!).

The Discovery of the South Pole
The South Pole was discovered by Roald Amundsen, “the last of the Vikings,” in 1911. The race to the South Pole was one of the greatest international races prior to the race to the moon and was full of tragedy and triumph. It featured tiny, newly independent Norway against the British Empire, upon which the “sun never set.” It was David vs Goliath. Join us as we tell the gripping story of those who perished and prevailed in this epic quest. This event is sponsored by Brookdale Meridian Boulder.
